The client, who operated a B&B, was captivated by Huam-dong, where wooden house built during the Japanese colonial period are lined up. Most of the guests were foreign tourists, and the client wanted to incorporate the colors of traditional Korean architecture into the space. While the first and second floors were already being used as a B&B, a plan was made to renovate the second floor.
The main requests were to reveal the previously hidden roof structure to enhance the sense of space and to tilt the windows so that the exposed brick facade of the church across the street could be prominently viewed.
Upon removing the ceiling, it was revealed that the beams were split in half, and the house had been gradually deteriorating over a long period. The split beams were reinforced with two layers of 2×10 structural lumber bolted together, and the gaps between the roof sheathing were caulked since the space would be used as a B&B. The ceiling spaces of the bedroom and the utility room are visually continuous, yet separated by a single layer of acrylic sheet. Indirect lighting connected to the bathroom was installed within this space, allowing the presence of someone in the bathroom to be perceived visually through the ceiling.
The demolition, carpentry, metalwork, electrical, and plumbing work were all carried out by Guerrilla Builders, a two-member team, together with the client. The client handled the electrical and plumbing work, the former director took care of carpentry and metalwork, and the site manager was responsible for masonry and plastering. Guerrilla Builders’ philosophy is to maximize design potential within limited resources.
