밀집한 주택가에 끼어있는 듯한 작은 집을 수리했습니다. 시작은 지붕을 간단히 수리하는 것이었으나, 집을 꼼꼼히 조사하면서 계획이 늘어났습니다.

당초 기존 지붕을 칼라강판 혹은 아스팔트 슁글로 덧씌울 계획이었는데, 기존 시멘트 기와를 모두 드러내고 기존 구조를 보강하는 쪽으로 계획을 바꿨습니다. 누수의 원인이었던 평지붕과 모임지붕의 접점을 박공지붕으로 변경하면서 자연스럽게 고측창을 형성했습니다. 지붕 구조를 보강함에 따라 평천장을 유지하려던 계획 역시 박공 모양을 따라 천장을 재시공하며 벽/천장을 수성연질폼으로 일체화시켜 단열공사까지 진행했습니다. 기존 화장실은 현관문을 나와 외부인 안마당을 거쳐 들어가는 불편함이 있었기에, 내부에서 진입할 수 있도록 진입구를 변경했습니다.

돌아가신 할아버님이 직접 지으신 집이었기에, 할아버님이 올리신 상량문을 드러내고 조명을 비추는 일은 이 집을 고치면서 가장 즐거운 순간이었습니다. 할아버님이 만들어놓으신 다락 창고는 당장의 용도가 없더라도 개방시키면서 거실 공간의 일부로 구현하고 싶었습니다.

We carried out the renovation of a modest house tucked within a densely built residential neighborhood. What began as a simple roof repair gradually evolved into a broader undertaking as we examined the condition of the house in detail.

Our initial plan was to overlay the existing roof with color steel sheets or asphalt shingles. However, upon closer inspection, we decided instead to remove the old cement tiles entirely and reinforce the structural framework. At the same time, we replaced the junction of the flat and hipped roofs—where leaks had originated—with a gabled form, which naturally created a clerestory window. Strengthening the roof structure also led us to abandon the original idea of preserving the flat ceiling; we reconstructed it to follow the new gable line, integrating the walls and ceiling with sprayed polyurethane foam insulation for improved performance. The existing bathroom, once accessible only by stepping outside the front door and crossing the courtyard, was reconfigured to allow direct entry from within the house.

Since the home was originally built by the late grandfather, revealing and illuminating the ridge beam inscription he had raised proved to be one of the most meaningful moments of the renovation. Similarly, although the attic he had created was not intended for immediate use, we chose to open it up and incorporate it as part of the living room, preserving its presence as a tangible memory within the daily life of the household.
